In the early 1990s, Nepal witnessed a transformative shift in its drug landscape, with the rise of injection drug use in response to stringent enforcement against oral drugs. The proliferation of pharmaceutical injections, notably Buprenorphine (Tidigesic), further fueled this transition, leading to increased risk behaviors among injecting drug users (IDUs). Unfortunately, the confluence of shifting drug-use trends and intensified law enforcement resulted in alarming rates of HIV and Hepatitis C infections among people who inject drugs (PWID).
Responding to this urgent crisis, a group of individuals facing the challenges of drug use, HIV and Hepatitis C diagnoses gathered in a drug rehabilitation center in 2003. Faced with grave stigma, discrimination, and limited access to proper HIV and Virla Heptatis treatment, this diverse collective of PWID & PLHIV decided to take action. Thus, Sathi Samuha (S.S.), meaning "Friends Group," was established in Kathmandu, Nepal, in February 2006. Legally registered and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council, the organization has grown and evolved to address the gaps in HIV & Hepatitis prevention, treatment, and care programs.
Our Focus: Sathi Samuha is dedicated to advocating for the rights of PWID & PLHIV at local, national, regional, and international levels. Over the years, the organization has expanded its geographic and programmatic coverage to meet the evolving needs of its beneficiaries.
Vision: Our vision is rooted in the challenges of HIV/AIDS, health, poverty, and resources. We envision a free and just society where every individual living with HIV, Hepatitis, and those who use drugs lead a dignified and productive life, free from all forms of stigma and discrimination.
Mission: As a community-led organization, we exist to ensure that all PLHIV and PWIDs have easy access to quality healthcare services and live a dignified life free from stigma and discrimination. We achieve this through peer-led service delivery, community sensitization, awareness raising on drugs, harm reduction, HIV&AIDS, and advocacy at all levels.
S.S. remains committed to its mission, working tirelessly to create a positive impact on the lives of those affected by HIV, Hepatitis, and drug use, fostering a society where everyone is treated with respect, understanding, and dignity.
