Summary:
With a financial support from Youth Lead; the largest network of Young Key Popultion (YKP) in Asia and the Pacific SATHI SAMUHA has commenced the implementation of a small-term project called 'Potential YPWID (Young people who inject drugs) friendly Interventions for Piloting' in Kathmandu district since 1st June 2022 to 30th November 2022. (The project has now been extended for one more month; until 31st December 2022).
Technical partners for this project include SPARSHA Nepal and Recovering Nepal; national network of drug service organizations in Nepal.
The major objectives of this project are:-
(1) To assess the ground realities and situation of harm reduction programs & services available for YPWIDs in Kathmandu (if any).
(2) To identify groups & or organizations working for YPWIDs in Kathmandu and develop a close coordination & networking with them in order to deliver a collective response & necessary services to the high-risk group of YPWIDs and
(3) To develop strategies for the preparation of future programs targeting YPWIDs based on the outcomes of this pilot project.
Project Activities:-
1. Capacity development training for NSEP Outreach Workers and OST Counselors on harm reduction program & service delivery exclusively for YPWIDs.
2. Conduct regular 'Outreach Activities' considering the convenenience of the project beneficiaries;YPWIDs. For example, conducting outreach activity outside regular hours like from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.in the morning & from 4:00- to 5:00 p.m. in the evening (In winter season). Additionally, conducting school & workplace-based outreach activity targeting students and employed YPWIDs.
3. Media Progam; Create online platforms for YPWIDs to discuss subject matters concerning them and develope a Facebook Page, Messenger Group and a Closed Group for discussions & outreaching.
4. Focus Group Disucsssion (FGD); Conduct 3 FGDs among YPWIDs to discuss issues concerning their health, drug use & risk behaviors they practices along with solutions like 'Safer Injecting Practice', 'Vein Care Management' among others.
5. Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) Sessions; Conduct 10 youth-friendly BCC sessions at DIC with different topics.
6. IEC Material development & distribution; Planned to print T-shirts with messages & graphics/images related to issues of YPWIDs in the context of Nepal.
7. DIC Refurbishment (Later proposed activity); 2 DICs have been refurbished with indoor games like Carom-board, Chess, Ludo etc. and both DICs are decorated with posters of legendary rock stars such as Bob Marley, Jim Morrison, Metaalica etc. who all are popular among youths across the globe specially among young drug users.
